I am from Telangana state and live in its captial city, called Hyderabad.

The building behind me is called Charminar. It means four pillars in our local language. This building is landmark for our city.

Coming to Smoking topic. I found one good link which provides all information you are looking for.

Look at the bottom of the article where figurative study has been done on students in India. Students come under teenagers.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2669568/

As per the above link, the percentages are like as below for teenagers (College going students) in India:

6.9 to 22.5% males

0 to 2.3% females

The above link provides the figures. But i wish to share my experience too.

In the community i have grown, i did not see many people smoking when they were teenagers.

I had a circle of friends who never smoked. In India, the kids are taken care by the parents well and until the age of 22-23 boys and girls fear from their father.

Father will scold them, if they smoke. Some boys smoke, when they go to different city or place for education purpose.

They will meet some person with that habit and friends in turn motivate them to smoke. Otherwise, if they are with families they do not smoke.

Once they get into their job and become financially independent and because of work pressures etc., they start getting addicted to smoking.

Girls rarely smoke. You can never see a girl smoke in public. In private also they rarely smoke.

But in rural villages like that, they may smoke but i am not aware of that. Frankly, i never saw a Indian girl smoke, till this time.

Girls who smoke can not get married easily as smoking is considered to be very bad habit and Girls are like prohibited by the society from drinking and smoking.

Some boys smoke mostly after they finish 18 years of their education, because until that time, they will be busy in studies.

They will feel little bit independent, once they enter into their graduation. Even if they smoke, they never tell in the family.

If a father knows that his son is smoking he will beat him. In villages it might be different.

Smoking is not so popular in the neighbourhood i have seen. Even in my city it is not popular. Drinking is more popular than smoking.

Some teenagers smoke for fun, some teenagers smoke to feel great. But i have never seen a teenager say that he started smoking to counter pressure due to studies. But working people smoke to counter work pressures.

In cosmopolitan cities like mumbai & delhi, the smoking percentage might be higher. I am not sure of the reason. In delhi it can be because of chilly winters. But in mumbai i am not sure. The percentage varies from city to city.
